About the Tool

The New Jersey Teachers’ Pension and Annuity Fund (TPAF) provides a defined benefit pension to public school teachers and certified employees across the state. The benefit is calculated with a formula based on your years of service, your final average salary, and a pension factor. This tool is designed to give you a reliable estimate of your potential retirement allowance to help with your financial planning.

Key Features of Our Tool

  • Official Formula: Uses the state’s formula (Years of Service / Pension Factor * Final Average Salary) for accurate estimates.
  • Early Retirement Reductions: Automatically calculates the reduction in your benefit if you plan to retire before your normal retirement age (65 for most members).
  • Survivor Benefit Modeling: The advanced options let you see how choosing a survivor benefit to protect a beneficiary will impact your monthly allowance.
  • Tier Awareness: Allows you to select different pension factors (N/55 or N/60) to better match your specific TPAF tier.

How To Use This Tool

  1. Enter Service Details: Input your total years of service, your Final Average Salary (FAS), and the age at which you plan to retire.
  2. Select Pension Factor: Most members hired after 2011 are in Tier 5 and use the N/55 factor. Members in older tiers may use N/60. Check your Member Benefit Statement if unsure.
  3. Use Advanced Options (Optional): Select a survivor benefit option if you wish to provide a continuing pension for a beneficiary after your death.
  4. Click “Calculate”: View your estimated monthly and annual retirement allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Final Average Salary (FAS)?

For TPAF members in Tiers 4 and 5, your FAS is the average of your salaries from your five highest-paid years of service. For Tiers 1, 2, and 3, it is based on your three highest-paid years.

2. What does “N/55” mean?

“N” stands for your years of service. The N/55 formula means your years of service are divided by 55 and then multiplied by your Final Average Salary. For example, 25 years of service would be calculated as (25/55) * FAS.

3. How is the early retirement penalty calculated?

If you retire before your normal retirement age (typically 65), your benefit is reduced by 1/4 of 1% (or 0.25%) for each month you are under that age. This calculator applies this reduction automatically based on your retirement age input.

4. Is this an official estimate from the NJ Division of Pensions & Benefits?

No. This is an unofficial planning tool. For a formal, official estimate, you must log in to your Member Benefits Online System (MBOS) account on the official NJ Pensions website or request an estimate directly from the Division.
